Comet Lovejoy C2014 Q2 in Eridanus
Comet sketched from Wailuku, Maui, HI
Elevation: 450 ft. January 6, 2015
This sketch was executed with pencil on white paper out in my yard and scanned to my MacBook. I reversed the color and labeled it in GIMP. This sketch was rendered when the comet was almost at its brightest in the constellation Eridanus. Although many observers didn’t see the tail as readily as this sketch reveals, I found that I could see it better with averted vision. SkySafari ranked it at a magnitude 5 at that time. In my notes I pointed out three stars almost in a line running west to east and two more further east on a NE to ENE axis, one of which is Struve 536, a double star with a separation of only 1.5 arc seconds. ZI Eri at magnitude 5.2 is to the NNE in line with the tail of the comet. As noted, I used a 2″ Explore Scientific 18mm eyepiece with no filter on a Vixen 104mm refractor. I noted a Transparency of 2 – 3 out of 5 and a Seeing of 4 out of 10. The moon was nearly full in Cancer and low in the east at the time.

I send one sketch from january of C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) seen with 50X magn.
in my telescope. I could see two faint stripes in the beginning of the tail.
I used pencil (9B) on white paper and inverted. Info on my sketch.
Loc.: Trondheim, Norway.
I also used 10 x 50 binos, and could see a longer, faint tail to east!

Hi,

This sketch of my favorite planet of the solar system, that day their moons aligned, the great red spot and below this, the shadow of Europe, the picture was very rewarding and enjoyed meeting observation, but since the city only allows this type comments, try to have a place for these events really impressive. The original sketch was reduced and adjusted as is the eyepiece.

Hi This is a sketch of the planet Jupiter made throught my 6” achromatic refractor (TS Individual 152/900), binoviewer, a pair of 8 mm eyepieces and glasspath that gave me 293x. The seeing was very good during all the observation, allthought the arriving of high clouds at 01:00 am ended with the fun.

It was remarcable the wedge that seems to divide the NEB and a bright patch between this belt and NTB that reminds a great oval.

January the 10th the two inner planets of our solar system are very close. Following the nice pastel sketch made by Frank Jan 6th (ASOD Feb 2nd) I will take the opportunity to compare its view with this I made 4 days later.
While my watercolor session, a probable Quadrantide meteor produce a brilliant flash.

The two planets are easily seen in the field of my UWA EP.

Telescope: SkyWatcher Maksutov 5″.
Eyepiece: SW TMBII 7mm (214x), SW TMBII 9mm (166x), Explore Scientific 14mm 82º (107x).
Conditions: Seeing: 3.
Observations: The size does not represent de actual FOV. I used different powers because some details were visible with certain EP’s. The drawing took me around 45 minutes, so the planet rotation was noticeable!

I made a digital animation in GIMP of a partial eclipse of Europa by Ganymede (27%). During the event I saw clearly a “division” between the two moons but it was impossible to tell which moon was before the other. Because I couldn’t detect any color difference between the two moons I guess the “division” was an optical illusion due to the 8-figure. Hope you like it!

I always have issue to find Uranus, without GoTo, it’s not so easy…and I don’t like facility…
Thinks are moving in our planet system. It’s why “planetos” in Greek means “vagabond”.
So I use the opportunity of this double conjunction just a week from each other to find Uranus and its so nice colour.
The Venus-Uranus separation was 5.2’ Venus was 10’000 more brilliant than Uranus, while the separation between Mars and Uranus, one week later was 16.25’
The faint K star between Mars and Uranus is HIP 4325 mag=9.5, so no Uranus satellites were visible with my material.

I sketch the two fields on white watercolour paper with inverted method using a chromatic wheel, orange for Venus, blue for Mars and crimson red for Uranus then I just have to invert the two sketches after scanning. The deal is to manage the colour values in inverted mode.
