Aloha,

Todays solar surface showed some interesting features that I tried to capture. There were a lot of long detailed filaments as well as a region to the east that looked like a piece of silk that had been crinkled and then flattened. To the west of this area was a brightening plage, at the moment the brightest region in the observation besides a bright spike on the limb. The prominences to the north were more subtle and dim.

Hello dear ASOD friends,

Since I saw this wonderful comet on last december, I haven’t had the opportunity to process the raw sketches on photoshop.
I was initially planning to do one sketch, but since on 30th December there was a “conjunction” with M79, I decided to compare how bright they seemed compared each other. There was an enormous difference in apparent magnitude between the two objects as you can see in the sketch. I have the “feeling” of having seen the comet tail but being honest I could not adapt well my night vision since there was a lot of artificial lights around and therefore It could be just a “feeling” than a real view.

This sketch contains the open cluster NGC 1502 and an asterism made up of a 2 1/2° chain of stars that forms a line from the cluster towards the northwest called Kemble’s Cascade. Kemble’s Cascade was so named by the late Walter Scott Houston, who authored Sky and Telescope’s magazine column “Deep Sky Wonders” for decades. Lucian Kemble was the person who sent Houston a description and drawing of the cascade.

I always have issue to find Uranus, without GoTo, it’s not so easy…and I don’t like facility…
Thinks are moving in our planet system. It’s why “planetos” in Greek means “vagabond”.
So I use the opportunity of this double conjunction just a week from each other to find Uranus and its so nice colour.
The Venus-Uranus separation was 5.2’ Venus was 10’000 more brilliant than Uranus, while the separation between Mars and Uranus, one week later was 16.25’
The faint K star between Mars and Uranus is HIP 4325 mag=9.5, so no Uranus satellites were visible with my material.

I sketch the two fields on white watercolour paper with inverted method using a chromatic wheel, orange for Venus, blue for Mars and crimson red for Uranus then I just have to invert the two sketches after scanning. The deal is to manage the colour values in inverted mode.

Este es el segundo dibujo que hago de este cúmulo abierto. Decidí volver a retratarlo bajo condiciones distintas de observación, esta vez había Luna llena y la idea es comparar ambas condiciones de observación. El seeing no era muy bueno, la atmósfera presentaba turbulencias que desenfocaban la imagen por momentos.

El dibujo fue realizado con papel y lápiz, posteriormente procesado en Photoshop para invertir los colores y simular el efecto de resplandor que genera la luna en el cielo. Además agregué algo de color a las estrellas, tal como las veo a través del ocular (huygens 25mm), pero los colores se atenuaron un poco al fusionar una capa celeste para dar el tono de luz de Luna al fondo. En realidad deberían verse los azules y el rojo de la estrella central más vivos. El equipo que utilicé para realizar el sketch es un telescopio reflector marca Helios, de 114mm de apertura y 900mm de distancia focal. El dibujo fue realizado desde Pergamino, Buenos Aires.

Aloha,

IC 405, Caldwell 31 or the Flaming Star Nebula is an emission/reflection nebula that requires darkness and patience to pull details out. A 12.5” reflector was used here to observe and a NPB filter from DMG optics helpful. I observed & sketched the same object 3 years ago and didn’t see the details visible this time around. I would partly account this to gaining greater ability from sketching the object again with more patience this time around.

Proper motion studies of AE Auriga show it to be an ejected star from the Orion Belt region. Its chance passage through this nebulous region of gas & dust give it a “Flaming Star” appearance.

Last week at the 26th. February I took the chance to make a sketch of the mutual moon cover. Of course, I also observed Jupiter. The air was not so good but in quite moments there were some details to hold.
All in all it was a real fantastic night. First ran Callisto and its shadow over the planet. Then Kallisto covered Europa and at last moved Io over the planetary disk followed by his shadow.

I enjoyed the Moment when Io covered Europe and sketched this nice scenery for my astro-log.

I realized the sketch with pencils on white paper, then inverted.

This crater is located in the western part of Nibium Sea. It has a dimension of approximately 60 x 60 km . It is accompanied by Bullialdus A and Bullialdus B, two craters considerably smaller.Like the idea was to draw the area , you can see the KONIG crater (20 x 20 km), which is a little more to the west, and LUBINETZKY crater . The observation was made with NW telescope Sky watcher 150/750, with a TMB II 5 eyepiece

Seeing didn’t help at all, but anyway, it took me a while to finish the sketchs; the original idea was to draw at least six different stars from different constellations, but right after finishing Regulus, clouds came out to stop my work.

I used a 130mm reflector at 100x to make this sketch. The weather was cold and clear with good seeing and a limiting magnitude of 5.4. Despite the good seeing, I had to be quite patient to see all the shadows. Callisto itself was easy but Io was quite difficult. It was wonderful to see the shadows suddenly appear during moments of good seeing but at other times not all of them were visible at any one time.

There was suburban, slightly hazy sky, although it was clear enough, stabilized by frosty atmosphere.

Beautiful and bright comet reigned today on the border of Perseus and Andromeda near the star Alamah. It was a really marvelous, faint shield, perfectly visible in the wide field of binoculars Vixen 16×80. Also appeared quite delicate colour (as in the planetary nebula) such as glimmer of green. The comet looked like a miniature of asterism swan constellation. 4 star: In the left yellowish HD 1152, in the middle blue-and-white Hd 11188, and on the right white HR 526

The comet core flowed through the center of Hd 11188 star. At the bottom of asterism was like miniature Albireo – yellow SAO 37533,

My Vixen showed also almost visible beam which climbed up. This jet (tail of the comet) was extremely faint and diffuse, shooting up like a geyser!

This is my latest sketch conjunction of Venus and Mars. The planet was near the moon, one day after the new moon. You can see the moon was light gray. When sketching, the sky was clear, visibility was very good, light wind was blowing.

Once again I had the opportunity to use the fast (3.3) 24″ reflector made by Olivier Planchon. The EP used is a 2″, 31mm Nagler.
The C2014/Q2 Lovejoy comet fades out on its way back. In the same FOV we can see M76 a planetary nebulae. The NGC number is double because when discovered people suspected that this was a double nebulae (NGC 650 & NGC 651). The distance of M76 is still unknown.
During our 1 hour session we were able to observe the displacement of the proto-nucleus facing a nice m= 8.7 K5 red star, SAO 22504. The separation was here only 1’. To make this small gif animation I made 7 sketches to indicate the relative positions.
The light of this star takes 1400 years through the coma to reach our planet while the light takes only 10 minutes from Lovejoy to us.
That was a nice double rendez-vous!

Róisín Mulligan is only nine , she had a look at C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy in my telescope for what was really a brief encounter. Like the other children in the club she was queuing up to see their first ever comet. Somehow unknown to me she managed to produce a sketch in the dark in her own notebook , directly from her memory . This sketch surfaced when we returned to the classroom to finish up our meeting. What a great independant effort on her part , everyone was impressed.

Viewed in a 200mm dob, 32 mm eyepiece ( 37X) with a 46 % illuminated moon in the way ! Róisín attends St Patricks National School Bray ,Co Wickow Ireland and is also a member of St Cronans Stargazers Astronomy Club at St Cronans National School in Bray.

This is my last drawing of Lovejoy comet. the comet shows an intense light and his tail extends beyond the field of view, being weaker and looking better by moving the binoculars.

SUPER SOLAR FILAMENT: It is, arguably, the second biggest thing in the solar system. A filament of magnetism almost 1,000,000 km long is stretching across the face of the sun. Only the sun itself is bigger. Stretched out, the line would fit 67 Earths!

Aloha!

The Suns surface has been very interesting to follow the past few days. A fascinating solar filament stretching across the surface is one of the longest recorded, over 700,000 km long. Solar filaments are made up of unstable plasma held above the solar surface by the Sun’s magnetic field.

I was able to observe it for 2 days in a row and marvelled over its sheer size, looking like a tear in the Suns surface. On this day there was also an interesting filament like region near the west limb that was wide and appeared dimensional in light and dark values. The “wishbone” prominence to the north appeared to be from beyond where the limb was visible, the top portion reaching toward the observer.
