Why ASOD?
- March 11th, 2007
The idea behind ASOD is to provide an appropriate stage for a single astronomical sketch for the entire day, much as other similar calendrical websites treat the best CCD and DSLR images supplied by amateurs. Obviously these other sites have specific areas of interest. One of the very cool things about Astronomical Sketching is that it includes just about every type of celestial object you can think of, and that makes it very attractive to all. This is another chance for sketching to reach out and instruct, not only with techniques but with serious discussion of the objects through the works and words of the artists themselves.
I am an educator in a planetarium in Prince George’s County, Maryland, USA. I think the Astronomy Sketch of the Day site is fantastic! I would like to use some of the sketches in my planetarium presentation entitled “More Than Meets the Eye.” I try to show fourth graders what various astronomical objects look like through a telescope – especially deep sky objects. My goal is to represent the views as realistically as possible, and astronomy sketches would be ideal. Would it be appropriate to make an appeal in an Astronomy Sketch of the Day comment for sketches of a few objects? I am seeking observers who are willing to share their work at no cost. I will acknowledge the observers in my presentation, and no images would be sold or used for any other purpose than education.

Could someone please explain the term “Solar Spring” (have googled it to no avail, much to my surprise; likewise with wikipaedia)?
Thanks a bunch,
