Holmes, I Presume?

NGC 1637

Galaxy NGC 1637
By Eiji Kato

No, this beautiful sketch by Eiji Kato is not of a local object within our solar system, such as Comet 17/P Holmes is today. Instead it is a sprawling spiral galaxy that lies some 25,000,000 light years away in the direction of the constellation Eridanus.

  1. Wonderful sketch Mr. Kato. In addition to the swooping spiral arm winding around the upper left, another interesting aspect of this sketch is that it appears to feature supernova 1999em. This supernova occurred at the same position noted by the star plotted just to the lower right of the core of the galaxy. See this link for more information and an image of the galaxy and supernova. What a great catch!
